A standard single garage in the UK measures 2.4m wide, 4.9m long and 2.1m tall, while a standard parking bay is 2.4m × 4.8m. On a typical terraced street, parking on one side leaves about 5.5m of road width. Many modern EVs, particularly SUVs, approach or exceed these limits.
We’ve tested every electric car sold in the UK against these real-world dimensions, looking beyond length and width to width with mirrors, the measurement that really matters when squeezing through a gap. Most car sites do not publish it.
EVs that comfortably fit a UK single garage
These cars fit in a standard 2.4m × 4.9m × 2.1m garage with enough clearance to open the doors (at least 200mm each side) and walk around (100mm front/rear).

Too long for a single garage
These EVs exceed 4.8m and won't fit in a standard UK single garage. If your garage is deeper than standard (many are), check the exact length - some will fit with millimetres to spare.

Narrowest EVs with mirrors - for tight streets
In everyday use, the width that matters is not the body width but the width with mirrors folded out. This measurement determines whether you can pass a parked van on a terraced street or get through a width restriction. Most manufacturer specification sheets leave it out; we track it.
| # | Car | W/ mirrors | Body width | Difference | Range |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Dacia Spring | 1.77m | 1.58m | +184mm | 139 mi |

Best turning circles - for parallel parking and U-turns
Compare turning circles when choosing an electric car for narrow streets, multi-storey car parks and tight parking spaces. A smaller turning circle can make low-speed manoeuvres easier.

UK reference dimensions
For context, these are the standard dimensions you will encounter in everyday UK driving:
- Single garage - 2.4m wide × 4.9m long × 2.1m high (minimum building regs)
- Double garage - 4.9m wide × 4.9m long × 2.1m high
- Standard parking bay - 2.4m wide × 4.8m long (some newer are 2.5m × 5.0m)
- Supermarket bay - often 2.5-2.7m wide (wider than standard)
- Width restriction bollards - typically 1.8m or 2.1m gaps
- Typical terraced street - 5.5m road width with cars parked on one side
- Car transporter max width - 2.55m (no mirrors)
Check both body width and width including mirrors when comparing electric cars. Measure your own garage entrance, parking space and access route to assess everyday clearance.
The data updates automatically whenever new models launch. Use our search tools to set maximum width and length, or compare specific models dimension by dimension.
